MEET Lara DeutscH: Our artist in resIDENCE 2019-2020

“I’m honoured to be joining Allegra as Artist in Residence for the 2019-2020 season. Having been a musician in the Bach Before Bedtime series for many years, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that Allegra makes in Montreal’s musical community and have great respect for their mandate.  I’m very much looking forward to exploring the chamber music repertoire with these excellent colleagues!”

Named one of 2015’s “Hot 30 Under 30 Canadian Classical Musicians” by CBC Music, flutist Lara Deutsch is a versatile soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician with a passion for connecting with audiences. A strong competitor, Lara was a first prize winner of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal’s 2014 Manulife Competition, at which she was awarded a total of seven prizes, including the Stingray Music Audience Award. Additionally, she was the Grand Prize Winner of both the National Arts Centre Bursary Competition (2014) and the Canadian Music Competition (2010), as well as a laureate of the Concours Prix d’Europe (2016).

Lara is currently based in the Ottawa-Montreal area, where she performs regularly with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, she has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (of which she acted as Assistant Principal Flute & Piccolo for the 2016-17 season), the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Banff Festival Orchestra, and the Orchestre de la francophonie, among others. She has also had the pleasure of appearing as a soloist with numerous ensembles, notably with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the McGill Symphony Orchestra, and the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra.

An avid chamber musician, Lara has taken part in festivals across Canada, the United States, and Europe, with recent highlights including recitals for CBC Radio’s CBC/McGill Series, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal’s Virée Classique, and Ottawa’s Music & Beyond Festival. She was the first flutist featured in a series of over 20 videos produced by Mécénat Musica noncerto from 2014-2016, which showcase a selection of her chamber music projects. Among her favourite collaborators are pianists Philip Chiu and Frédéric Lacroix, oboist Anna Petersen, guitarist Adam Cicchillitti, and most prolifically, harpist Emily Belvedere, with whom she founded Duo Kalysta. In the fall of 2019, Duo Kalysta’s debut album will be released on the Leaf Music label, to be followed by several tours in 2020.

Whenever possible, Lara enjoys performing for young audiences through educational outreach concerts, both as a member of the NAC’s Ayorama Wind Quintet and in collaboration with the SOMA String Quartet. She is similarly dedicated to sharing her transformative experiences through performance psychology training, having hosted workshops for performers of all levels at universities in Quebec and Ontario. Lara is incredibly grateful for the support of Mécénat Musica, the Canada Council for the Arts and FACTOR in her ongoing projects, as well as for the years of invaluable guidance from her principal teachers and mentors: Denis Bluteau, Tim Hutchins, Camille Churchfield, Cathy Baerg, and Jean-François Ménard. She is represented by Latitude 45 Arts.
